About the Pittsburgh Pirates

The Pirates began in 1882 originally known as the Alleghenies in the American Association.  The team changed its name to the Innocents in 1887 and moved to the National League.  Later the name was changed to the Pirates.  The team has won the World Series five times, in 1909, 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979.  Notable alumni include Willie Stargell, Roberto Clemente, and Honus Wagner The Pirates play in the National League Central Division.
